CPPCC Chairman on China's Environmental Issue

Environmental protection requires joint efforts from all over the world and China is willing to make contributions to the global issue, senior Chinese leader Li Ruihuan said Tuesday.

Li, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks while meeting with foreign delegates to the 21st Century Forum - Forestry and Environmental Protection, which is sponsored by the CPPCC National Committee.

Li said environmental protection has drawn common concerns from the people around the world since the environment has been seriously damaged by human activities in the past century.

He called it "an urgent and arduous task" to further arouse the people's environmental awareness and make concerted efforts to tackle environmental problems.

"Besides efforts by different countries, we need to increase international cooperation in environmental protection because (polluted) sea water flows without boundaries and (dirty) air comes without a visa," he said.

The forum has provided a high-level arena for further exchanges of views and thorough discussions on the topics of forestry and environmental protection among friends around the world, he said.

The chairman stressed that the Chinese government has attached increasingly great importance to environmental protection and good results have been made. One aspect of the progress is legislation on prevention and treatment of desertification. A law to the effect was adopted by China's top legislature last week.

Bakary Kante, director of the Division of Policy Development and Law, United Nations Environment Program, said on behalf of the foreign delegates that they would carry out cooperation projects with the Chinese government.

The three-day forum, which opened here today, is focusing on issues such as the environmental effect of forests, energy and environment, and environmental protection and the market.
