Sharks Kill 2 off U.S. East Coast Beaches
A shark attack Monday off U.S. North Carolina's Outer Banks has left one man dead and a woman in critical-but-stable condition.
The two were wading in shallow surf in Avon, N.C., about 20-40 feet from shore at around 6 p.m. when the attack occurred ¡ª the second fatal shark attack in the region of the holiday weekend.
The shark apparently tore the leg off the man below the knee, and possible bit the woman's foot off. She is also said to have substantial wounds to her torso. However, the extent of the injuries ¡ª and the names of the two ¡ª have not yet been made public.
On Saturday, 10-year-old David Peltier, of Richmond, Virginia, was attacked by a shark in shallow waters off Virginia Beach, Virginia ¡ª just 135 miles away from the scene of Monday's attack. Although the boy's father managed to beat the shark and free his son, the child died early Sunday in a hospital.
