Norway Grants 1.6 Million Dollars Against HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia

Norway has decided to grant 1.6 million U.S. dollars to finance building the capacity of the regional AIDS council secretariats and its implementing partners in youth HIV/AID prevention program in Ethiopia, said the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Office Monday in Addis Ababa.

The granting agreement, which is expected to be signed on Wednesday between UNICEF and Norway in Addis Ababa, comes in response to the rapid spread of HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia, which is threatening precious development gains achieved in recent years, said the UNICEF office in a press release.

The number of HIV infected persons in Ethiopia is estimated to be close to 3 million, out of which 250,000 are children under the age of five.

In a related development, the United Nations Development Program is reportedly assisting Ethiopia's bid to host a major HIV/AIDS donor pledging conference later this year.
