Iran to Open Former US Embassy to PublicIran has planned to open former US embassy in central Tehran to public to mark the 22nd anniversary of its seizure by radical Islamic students in 1979, the official IRNA news agency reported Sunday. The embassy, dubbed the "den of spies" by IRNA, will be open to both foreign and domestic visitors as of November 4. Tools and apparatus used by the American personnel for " espionage" purposes will be displayed, said IRNA. On November 4, 1979, between 300 and 400 students climbed over the embassy's walls, seizing the embassy and taking staff members hostages for a total of 444 days. The incident led to a break in Tehran-Washington ties and U.S. sanctions against the Islamic Republic since then. The building has been used by Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards since its seizure. Iranian authorities organize a massive rally outside the embassy compound every year to mark the anniversary of the event. |
