Good Beginning for Development of West Hailed
The organizing committee of the 2001 Western Forum, which is to be staged in this capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province Tuesday, held its first press conference here Monday hailing the good beginning of the strategic development of the country's western region.
Li Zibin, deputy director of the Western China Development Office (WCDO) under the State Council and deputy director of the committee, told the press that the implementation of the policy has achieved a good start, with great potential shown in the economy and social development in the western region.
The development of the western region requires further emancipation of minds under the guidance of Chinese President Jiang Zemin's thoughts on the Three Represent's, Li said.
China will accelerate state-owned enterprise reform, opening-up, technological upgrading and economic restructuring during the development of the western region to improve the people's living standards, Li said.
Jia Zhibang, vice-governor of Shaanxi and deputy director of the forum's organizing committee, said that the annual forum is part of the Chinese government's western development strategy. It serves as a platform for exchanges and cooperation.
The forum is jointly sponsored by the WCDO, the State Development Planning Commission, the State Economic and Trade Commission, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, the Press Office under the State Council and the provincial government of Shaanxi.
Representatives from 12 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities and representatives of the eastern provinces, as well as overseas scholars, entrepreneurs will attend the forum.
