Chinese Vice-President on Emancipating Mind

Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao Monday stressed the importance of further emancipating the mind and pursuing the spirit of seeking truth from facts.

This is the spirit running through President Jiang Zemin's speech delivered on July 1 to mark the 85th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC), said Hu while addressing new students attending the Party School of the CPC Central Committee at an opening ceremony.

Hu is also president of the Party School.

"We should stick to Marxism. However, we should not be limited by certain specific judgments or programs of action drawn out at specific historical moments," he said, adding that Marxism, an open theoretical system, has kept developing in step with the times.

In the world today, which has witnessed dramatic changes compared with the past, China is faced with a lot of new problems. Proper solutions, nevertheless, can only be attained through the continuous refreshing of the mind, he said.

"If we stick to the old ideas, we will subsequently lag behind the times, and the Party will stop advancing and lose its leading status," said Hu.

The vice-president also stressed Jiang's important idea of the "three represents'", saying this should be earnestly put into practice in all aspects of Party work.

More than 1,500 people, including senior CPC officials and local grassroots officials from all over the country, attended today's ceremony.
