Fretilin Leads E. Timor Election

The Fretilin party won three districts election and led the vote counting in other areas in East Timor's first democratic election which was held on August 30, according to preliminary results on Monday.

Talking to Xinhua, the Independent Electoral Commission information official Catarina Fabianzen said that Fretilin led the vote counting since it was commenced on Friday.

"Three Fretilin officials have already won districts election in Aileu, Covalima and Lautem," Catarina said from Dili, capital of East Timor.

Sixteen political parties are vying for 88 seats in the constituent assembly that will have 90 days to write and adopt a constitution for an independent and democratic East Timor.

The single chamber assembly will comprise 75 popularly elected legislators from across East Timor and one each from the 13 districts.

Fabianzen said the announcement of the final results is expected to be conducted on September 7.

Fretilin, the biggest party in East Timor, was established by East Timorese leader Jose Alexandre "Xanana" Gusmao and Jose Ramos Horta in 1974.
