Beijing to Expand Public Security Information Network

The Public Security Bureau of this Chinese capital signed a contract Sunday with Qinghua, one of China's most prestigious universities, to cooperate in the establishment of a digital wide-band network.

The building of the network, aimed to better equip the police force in Beijing, is called the Golden Shield Project.

With a total investment of 80 million yuan, the network will be used to store data concerning suspects, anti-smuggling, figure print comparison, bullet mark diagnosis and DNA searches.

The project is expected to be finished in the first half of next year, and will enable the police to carry out on-line monitoring and long-distance training, among other things.
