China Starts to Train Bio-informatic Professionals for Genomics ResearchChina set up its first two centers Saturday to provide training in the knowledge and skills for deciphering the secrets of life at Zhejiang University and a training center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Beijing. The move represents the birth of a new discipline in China, called genomic bio-formatics, focusing on genome research with the help of biology and informatics. A group of graduate students specializing in genomic bio- formatics at Zhejiang University began their first day of the new semester as the country's first students specializing in the new discipline. A spokesman for the university and CAS said that Eric Lander, a leading figure in the international Human Genome Project and a biology professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ( MIT) in the United States, has been appointed honorary president of the two training centers. The new discipline will help mankind decipher the genetic code of all living things, including man himself.
