Senior Official on Religious Belief

A senior Chinese official recently pointed out that religious activities should be conducted in line with the country's socialist system so that citizens' religious freedom can be better protected.

Wang Zhaoguo, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said during a recent inspection tour of west China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region that the Communist Party of China (CPC) respects the law government the existence and development of religions and will unit all religious believers to make joint progress.

Wang, also head of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee, said developing China's west is an important strategy the government is carrying out for this century and called for efforts to fight against splittism, religious extremism and terrorism so as to create a favorable social environment for the western development campaign.

Xinjiang, located in northwest China and rich in natural resources, is a key point in the western development strategy.

Wang also expressed appreciation over Xinjiang's rapid economic and social progress as well as political stability in recent years, and called on the people of different nationalities in the region to unit closely together and learn from each other for common development.
