Philippine Police Tightened Security in Foreign Embassies

The Philippine National Police has ordered tighter security measures in embassies following the arrest of three foreign terrorists suspected of planning to bomb the Vietnamese Embassy.

Police chief Leandro Mendoza said he ordered the National Capital Region Police Office and the Special Action Forces to detail additional personnel to back policemen on security duty in embassies,the Malaya newspaper reported Sunday.

Mendoza said the suspected bombers -- Vu Van Doc, 41, an American citizen of Vietnamese origin; Makokoto Ito, 62, Japanese; and Hyunh Thuan Ngo, 42, a Swiss of Vietnamese origin -- were charged in court Friday with possession of explosives and violation of immigration laws.

Police have said the suspects might be planning to bomb the Vietnamese embassy on Sunday hich is the national day of the Republic of Vietnam.

Vu is also wanted by the Royal Thai Police for his role in the foiled bombing of the Vietnamese embassy in Bangkok last June 19.

He was also implicated in an arson attack at the Vietnamese embassy in London on September 2 last year.

The suspects were arrested Thursday in San Juan, Metro Manila.

Seized from the three were improvised explosive devices consisting of detonating cords, several bags of ammonium nitrate and wires with improvised blasting caps.
