It Is Not Favored in HK to Use Reserves to Help Low-Skilled Workers
The Hong Kong government would not simply hand out cash to help the low-skilled workers to cope with the current sluggish economic situation for the sake of their long-run interests, said Antony Leung, Hong Kong's financial secretary, on Saturday.
Leung told a stand-up media session after attending a radio program that "just giving out cash using the reserves may not solve the problem because we may actually assist our citizens for just one day. What about the next day? What about in the long run? We don't have unlimited reserves."
"What is more appropriate, I believe, is to use reserves in a meaningful way, in a way that actually creates jobs for our citizens, say, for example, we can improve the infrastructure, we can educate our people more, give them a lot more retraining opportunities so that they can find the jobs for themselves," said the financial secretary.
