Qatar Edges United Arab Emirates 2-0 in World Cup Qualifier

Qatar defeated the United Arab Emirates 2-0 in a World Cup Group B Asian qualifying match on Friday.

It was Qatar's first success after their goalless draw against Oman and a 2-1 loss against Uzbekistan, but China's victory keeps them in the driving seat for the automatic qualifying spot with six points from two games.

Qatar are second with four points but have played a game more. Qatar will meet China in Doha next Friday.

Ahmad Khalifa netted the opening goal for Qatar with a 65th minute header and teammate Abdul Nasser Ali added another six minutes later.

UAE, who lost to China 3-0 last week after a fluent 4-1 win against Uzbekistan, failed to translate midfield superiority into goals.

Teams in Asian groups A and B play each other home and away, with the group winners automatically qualifying for the finals.

The two runners-up play-off on a home and away basis to qualify for a final play-off with a runner-up from the European qualifying competition.
