Rebels Make Bangladeshi Political Parties Difficult in Poll Campaign

The rebels and their supporters remained unmanageable till Saturday, making it difficult for the candidates nominated by political parties to launch poll campaign in their respective constituencies unhindered.

Intra-party clashes left at least two activists of the former ruling Awami League killed and over 600 injured in different areas since the filing of nominations by the candidates on August 29 last, according to informed sources.

Both Awami League and the Bangladesh Nationalist party (BNP)- led 4-party alliance have been facing agitation of the rebels in at least 30 to 40 seats in different regions in the country.

The rebels, being refused by the party or alliance tickets, filed nominations as independent candidates and in some areas they have been organizing agitation against the officials nominees.

Meanwhile, banks in the country have detected at least 118 cases of loan default involving over 100 candidates who have filed nominations to contest the coming general election scheduled on October 1.

As per law, loan defaulters disqualify for contesting elections both at national and local levels.

The Election Commission has found valid 2,405 nomination papers out of a total of 2,548 for the election.

It canceled nominations of 143 aspirants, most of them bank loan defaulters.
