Aide to Bush Adviser Sentenced to Year in Prison

An aide to George W. Bush's campaign was sentenced Friday to one year in prison and fined US$3, 000 for mailing secret debate material to Democratic rival Al Gore's campaign and then lying about it to a grand jury.

Juanita Lozano, 31, admitted she mailed a videotape of then- Republican candidate Bush practicing for a campaign debate and some confidential debate material to Gore's campaign.

Lozano, who was an aide to top Bush media adviser Mark McKinnon, sent the confidential debate materials to former U.S. Representative Tom Downey who was advising Gore in his campaign. Downey turned over the material to the FBI.

U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks in Texas scolded Lozano for trying to disrupt the presidential election. "Our whole system of government depends on free elections," he said.

Lozano, a Democrat, told the judge Friday that she was particularly sad that as a convicted felon she loses her right to vote.
