Eleven Sailors Rescued After Spending Night in the Sea

Eleven Chinese sailors were rescued Friday morning off the coast of Zhejiang Province in east China after spending a whole night in the sea.

The sailors on the cargo vessel "Sulinli 18" were tossed into the sea near Beiji Island off the coast of southern Zhejiang at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday, when their vessel capsized in strong waves.

One of the sailors, Lin Deye, was washed to the island and was able to report the accident to the border police on the island.

The police soon mobilized six fishing boats and rushed to the accident scene.

At about 5:30 a.m., the rescuers found five sailors located about two nautical miles to the east of the island, struggling besides a container. They were retrieved on board with ropes.

Three other sailors were saved near another container at almost the same time. But it was not until 6:200 a.m. that the other four sailors drifting on the sea with life jackets were also rescued.

The cargo vessel was carrying 55 containers and had 12 staff on board when the accident happened. It departed Shanghai at 8:30 a.m. Thursday and was on its way to Shantou port in Guangdong Province.

All but two of the 55 containers sank.
