19 Companies Licensed for Producing CDMA Mobile Phones

Approved by the State Development Planing Commission, 19 companies have lately got license for producing mobile phones of China Unicom's CDMA (code division multiple access) network, including Bird, Kejian, ZTE, Capitel, TCL, Haier, Eastcom, Konka, Hisense, Nanjing PTIC, Tianjin PTIC, Xoceco and Motorola.

The CDMA network construction is now going along smoothly, says Lu Jianguo, vice president of China Unicom, adding that it can be completed in the fourth quarter this year and put into operation by yearend or beginning of next year. He also says that an earlier permission of terminal manufacture would help promote communications among operators, terminal suppliers and retailers and have agreements signed based on market needs.

China Unicom is not only striving for CDMA network construction, but also for terminal products of top quality, design, performance and lower prices. Lu stresses that China Unicom is still sticking to the principle that users select by themselves the network they'd like to enter.

As reported, the total capacity of first stage construction is 15.15 million subscribers, covering nearly 300 cities across the country.
