Chinese Star Li Cruises into Women's 200m Final at Universiade

Chinese star Li Xuemei cruised into the women's 200m final with the fastest time of 22.76 seconds in the semi-finals at the 21st Universiade on Friday.

Li, Asian record holder of women's 200m in 22.01 seconds, took the lead with her powerful stride early in the race and crossed the line well ahead of Kim Gevaert of Belgium, who was second in 23.00.

"I'm now in pretty good form," said the sprinter. "I'm confident to win the gold this afternoon."

Swiss Mireille Donders reached the final with the third best time of 23.13 seconds.

Another Chinese Yan Jiankui, who was almost caught up with by Nicole Marahrens of Germany in the final sprint, also qualified for the last eight in 23.41.

The women's 200m final will take place in the afternoon.
