Shanghai Considers Lifting Control of Film Ticket Pricing
Shanghai is considering lifting its control of film ticket prices, local officials said Monday.
Several local cinemas have ignored the government's unified pricing system by setting ticket prices on their own for the American blockbuster "Pearl Harbor."
During the past week, a ticket for the "Pearl Harbor" premiere cost 100 yuan (12 U.S. dollars and the prices of tickets for non- premiere shows ranged from 30 to 60 yuan, all unprecedented under the existing unified pricing system.
Local officials said the move by the local cinemas was triggered by the fierce competition between local cinemas, including joint ventures and solely-foreign-funded cinemas.
Under the current pricing policies, ticket prices are under the control of the Price Bureau of the Shanghai Municipal government.
Local officials said Shanghai Municipal government has submitted a proposal to the central government departments on lifting the control of film ticket prices in the city and allowing individual cinemas to set their own prices.
