China's women beach volleyball duo Chi Rong and Xiong Zi beat Vassiliki Karadassiou and Efrosyni Sfyri of Greece 21-19, 21-19.

In a tight match, the Greek team matched the seventh seeds Chi and Xiong point for point for most of the two sets, but the Chinese team proved to be the stronger one.

Women's world champions and number two seeds Adriana Behar and Shelda Bede had no problems in winning 21-11, 21-14 over their Australian opponents, Angela Clarke and kylie Gerlic.

In the men's group, only Austrians, Nikolas Berger and Oliver Stamm managed to get through when not seeded in the top eight.

Australians Julien Prosser and Lee Aahner, seeded third, were impressive in their 21-13, 21-15 win over the Swedes Bjorn Berg and Simon Dahl.
