China Beats Saudi Arabia in World Championship Preliminaries

The Chinese national men's team kept their victory by beating Saudi Arabia 25-22, 25-20, 25- 20 here Wednesday in the group competition of the Asian preliminaries for the 2002 World Volleyball Championship in Macao.

In the opening day competition on Tuesday, the Chinese outspiked the Thai side 25-23, 25-18, 25-13.

A total of 12 team, divided into three groups, are participating in the Asian preliminaries matches with each group having four teams. The group winners plus two teams of the highest scores will qualify for the World Championship to be held in Argentina in September next year.

The Chinese team, with two straight wins, will meet the Australians Thursday for the group title. The Australians, who downed Thailand 3-1 on Wednesday, also registered two victories against no defeat.

Earlier on Tuesday, Australia routed Saudi Arabia 25-16, 25-21, 25-18.
