Jiang Zemin Meets US Visitors

Jiang Zemin Meets US Visitors
Chinese President Jiang Zemin met Thursday with Sy Sternbery, chairman, president and chief executive officer of New York Life Insurance Co. of the United States, and his party.

Extending welcome to Sternbery, Jiang said he appreciated the New York company's efforts to promote the Sino-U.S. ties in recent years.

Since the reform and opening-up, Jiang said, China has scored world-acclaimed achievements in various fields, with its comprehensive strength continuously increased and the people's living standard increasingly improved.

Following the accelerated pace of China's impending entry into the World Trade Organization, China will open itself even wider to the outside world, he said, adding it will, as planned, promote the opening-up of its banking, insurance, telecommunications, foreign and domestic trade as well as tourism sectors.

China welcomes more foreign companies, including the New York company, to take part in its economic construction, the Chinese president noted.

Sternberg said he and his company are willing to help further friendship towards China and work even harder to promote mutual understanding between the two peoples.

Present at the meeting were Minister in charge of the Central Foreign Affairs Office Liu Huaqiu, Director of the Information Office of the State Council Zhao Qizheng, and Chairman of the China Insurance Regulatory Commission Ma Yongwei.
