Qantas Resurrects Australian Airlines for Discount Carrier
Australia
n Qantas is to resurrect Australian Airlines as the name for its new discount carrier.
The new airline will take to the skies towards the end of next year.
Australian Airlines will take over some of Qantas' more unprofitable routes into Asia.
It will be run by Qantas' marketing chief, Denis Adams, a 30-year-veteran of the aviation industry.
Australian Airlines was the name of the domestic government-owned carrier which merged with Qantas in 1993 before privatisation.
Qantas chief executive Geoff Dixon says Australian Airlines is the perfect name to take the new low cost operation into the international arena.
Mr Dixon says the new airline will operate out of a number of Australian cities with fleet and livery details to be unveiled in coming months.
