Washington Post Demands Punishment on Personnel Guilty of Negligence in Wen Ho Lee's Case

Tuesday's US Washington Post editorial said that the investigation process of nuclear scientist Wen Ho Lee's case of being charged with stealing nuclear weapon secrets is full of mistakes and the officials in charge should be held responsible for it.

US federal prosecutor Randy I. Bellows submitted a 800-page report to US Department of Justice in connection with the investigation process of Wen Ho Lee's case in May last year. It was publicized in early August with two chapters cut down. US Washington Post obtained the two deleted chapters and revealed them on August 27.

In spite of the over abridgement by the Department of Justice, that rendered the report unintelligible. The editorial said, what is the most disappointing is that the omitted part also pointed out that the personnel handling Lee's case are so incompetent that even an investigation of such an importance couldn't be carried out smoothly.

The only positive point in the two chapters is that Bellows, by putting forward strong evidence, excluded the possibility that Lee, born in Taiwan, was subjected to investigation because of his race.

According to Bellows' report, the editorial pointed out that the intelligence officials of Department of Energy misguided the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Therefore, it finally only focused on Lee himself; certainly Lee is a logical suspect, the report pointed out. However, there may be more than one person who might have stolen the US nuclear weapon secrets.

The editorial quoted Bellows' words in the two chapters, "the investigation this time is the best derelict example of improper administration, detection and handling of important anti-intelligence cases".

The editorial added that since Bellows launched such criticism, the US Department of Energy or Justice can hardly remain untouched. Congress also, once pouring oil to the flames, will be inevitably involved. The editorial claims, among those who have gone through the full text of the report there must be one who can step forward and guarantee not to follow the same old rut again later on.
