Taiwan Urged to Accept "One China" Principle

A commentary published Wednesday by Xinhua News Agency called on the Taiwan authorities to accept the "One China" principle, and honor its recent commitment of relaxing its control of cross-Straits economy and trade.

The commentary came in response to the consensus reached at Taiwan's "Economic Development Advisory Commission," including recommendations for easing cross-Strait economic and trade and investment restrictions, and establishing direct shipping links.

The meeting failed to reach consensus on recognizing the "1992 Consensus" as strongly recommended by three major opposition parties and industrial and commercial circles.

The failure has shown the Taiwan authorities still do not accept the "One China" principle or the "1992 Consensus", according to the commentary.

With regards to the recommendations, the commentary notes "our consistent attitude is that we are happy to see their success so long as they are conducive to the development of economic and trade ties. The early direct 'three links' between two sides of the Strait, and are in the interests of the general public and industrial and business circles in Taiwan."

"We hope the leader of the Taiwan authorities accepts the 'One China' principle as soon as possible, and recognizes the '1992 Consensus'."

The attempt to bypass the "One China" principle and "1992 Consensus" by focusing on economic issues is unrealistic and will get nowhere, the commentary says.
