China's Gao Sets New Asian Record in Women's Pole Vault
Gao Shuying of China set a new Asian record of 4.52 meters in the women's pole vault final after winning the gold medal Wednesday at the current Universiade.

After winning the gold with an easy clearance over 4.45 meters, a new meet record, the 22-year-old Gao went on to attack 4.52 meters. She failed in the first two actions, but made it with a brilliant vault in the final try.

Her jump beat the previous Asian record of 4.50 meters set by herself in the world championships early this month in Edmonton.

After the record-beating performance, the world fifth finisher gave up her attempt for good.

The silver was won by Sabine Schulte of Germany who cleared 4. 35 meters.
