Nortel Networks to Build ATM Backbone Networks for China TelecomChina Telecommunications Corporation (China Telecom), operator of China's largest terrestrial network, has signed agreements with Nortel Networks to update its multiservice backbone networks in a number of major cities throughout the country, sources reaching here from Nortel said Wednesday. These networks, collectively estimated to be worth about 8 million U.S. dollars, will enable China Telecom to deliver advanced ATM, frame relay, IP, Virtual Private Networks and other ene-to-end data services from a single, high-capacity platform, according to Robert Mao, chairman of Nortel networks China. The networks to be updated include those in east China's port city Tianjin, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality and Yunnan Province, and northeast China's Heilongjiang Province. "We are continuing to increase our momentum in China by bringing forward best-in-class products and solutions to help drive operator profitability," Mao said. In December, 2000, China Telecom awarded Nortel Networks a contract to build a national multiservice backbone network. Previously, China Telecom also chose Nortel Networks to provide multiservice networks in Shanghai and Hubei, Jiangsu and Shandong provinces. |
