Colombia Vice President Meets With Chinese Defense Minister

Colombian Vice President and Defense Minister Gustavo Bell Lemus met with visiting Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian Tuesday, saying his visit will promote the development of relations between the two countries and armed forces.

Bell said Colombia looks upon China as a great friend, and the Colombian government thanks the Chinese government for its previous support and aid in various fields.

The Taiwan issue is an interior affair of China and Colombia will, as always, firmly uphold the one-China policy, the vice president noted.

Chi, also vice chairman of the Central Military Commission and a state councilor, said he is honored to be the first Chinese defense minister to visit Colombia, and hoped his visit would promote the friendship and cooperation between the two countries and armed forces.

The Chinese minister expressed gratitude for the Colombian government's support and understanding of China's position on the Taiwan and human rights issues.

Chi arrived in Bogota earlier Monday at the invitation of Bell. He will leave for Venezuela on Thursday.
