Universiade Promises Revenue & Expenditure Balance

Situation of the 21st World University Games tells that the 280 million-yuan of funds will be quite enough to guarantee the smooth operation of the Universiade. It is a foregone conclusion that the revenue and expenditure can be balanced with a little bit to spare, said Sun Kanglin, secretary-general of the 2001 Beijing Universiade Organizing Committee.

Sun revealed that the operating funds of the over 40 institutions of the Universiade total 280 million yuan, among which, more than 120 million yuan come from governmental appropriation, over 90 million yuan come from sports lottery, 25 million yuan are advertisement and patent income, 20 million yuan are charges collected from players, and 20 million yuan are tickets income.

As sources say, the charge for each player is US$45 per day. However, the expenditure of meals in the Universiade Village hit 1.2 million yuan per day. Cost of other items is even bigger. Besides, the Universiade committee purchased 205 types, 130,000 units special sports apparatus which cost 24 million yuan. The expenditure of technical equipment reached 15 million yuan, and the opening ceremony and closing ceremony, about 40 million yuan.

Sun Kanglin said that the expenditure of the previous World University Games in Parma, Spain is US$100 million. The 21st World University Games cost 160 million yuan in stadium and gym maintenance and reconstruction. But the sum of expenditure did not count in working fund. "Less spending while working hard" and "be industrious and thrift" has become a pet phrase on the lips of the organizing committee.
