Senior Provincial Official on Trial

The trial of Mao Xuhui, former deputy secretary-general of the government of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southwest China, on charges of taking bribes started Tuesday in Fangchenggang City.

The prosecutors charge Mao, 55, for taking bribes totaling 185, 000 yuan and 50,000 Hong Kong dollars between 1995 and 1997 during his tenures as the deputy secretary-general of the Guangxi government and mayor of Fangchengang City.

In exchange for the bribes, Mao interfered in employee changes, promotion of officials, bidding for civil engineering contracts and the granting of import quotas, the prosecutors said.

Mao pleaded guilty during the court hearing Tuesday.

He was arrested by police on October 24, 2000.

More than 200 people witnessed the court hearing.
