3,300 NATO Soldiers Arrive in Macedonia for Weapons Collection

NATO spokesman to Macedonia Barry Johnson said Tuesday at a press conference that 3,300 NATO soldiers have arrived in Macedonia to participate in "Essential Harvest" operation to collect weapons from ethnic Albanian rebels, reports said.

100 new soldiers with two Turkish, one Canadian and one Polish aircraft arrived Tuesday, while 500 soldiers arrived on Monday, Johnson added.

NATO declared last Saturday that it would dispatch 4,500-5,000 soldiers in the Balkan country to collect weapons from ethnic Albanian rebels.

Meanwhile, Johnson said that the body of the British soldier killed Sunday night would be transported to his native country. He did not state any other details about the case.

Regarding the visit of NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson on Wednesday, Johnson said that his visit aimed to support the soldiers, to observe the ongoing operation, and to deliver the firm NATO determination that the operation must be successful.
