Ethiopia, Kenya to Strengthen Border Cooperation

Ethiopia and Kenya have agreed to open additional check-points along their common border following several agreements reached between the two sides at their 21st regular meeting last week in Mombassa, Kenya, the Ethiopian News Agency reported on Tuesday.

The report quoted an Ethiopian government official as saying that during the meeting, the two sides had solved the problems which sometimes occurred along their common border, and reached consensus to eliminate terrorist activities and arms trafficking in the border areas.

The official noted that the two parties agreed to develop information exchange capacity by improving radio communications systems.

According to a joint communique issued after the meeting, the two sides noted that since the last meeting held in Awassa, Ethiopia, incidents of cattle rustling, banditry and armed incursions have declined.

The next meeting between the two sides is expected to be held in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia in February 2002.
