Zhang Jian Swims Tianchi Lake
Zhang Jian, the first Chinese to swim the English Channel, swam across Tianchi Lake in Changbai Mountain on Tuesday.

The Beijing physical education teacher took water from the east shore, covering 3,370 meters to reach the west.

Tianchi Lake is at the top of Changbai Mountain and has an area of 9.82 square kilometers. The water temperature measured 6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

Zhang was hailed as a hero back home after his grueling crossing of the 35-kilometer English Channel waterway's cold seas.

Zhang, his body smeared with white grease to protect him from the 16-degree Celsius waters, took 11 hours and 56 seconds to cross the channel on July 30.

About 800 swimmers, including a 11-year-old, have crossed the English Channel, with quite a few having succeeded in two-way, or even three-way crossing.
