Yu Jingwei Gives Scare to Ryu Ji-Hye at Universiade Table Tennis

Chinese teenage paddler Yu Jingwei nearly upset third seed Ryu Ji-Hye of South Korea in the women's singles third round at the Universiade table tennis on Tuesday.

Ryu Ji-Hye was only able to dispose of Yu Jingwei 21-10 in the fifth and final set after a nail-biter battle.

Ryu rushed ahead with a 12-2 run in the first set after 6-6 and then led 20-11. Ryu held the third set point and win 21-13.

Yu was able to catch Ryu 20-10 after she fell behind 13-19 in the second set, but Ryu scored two straight points to make it 2-0.

But Yu, who has no world ranking, found her rhythm in the following two sets and led all the way to win 21-19, 21-16 to forced Ryu into the fifth set.

In the decider, Yu's poor returns and faults made her fall 5-10 and she finally lost the set 10-21.

Chinese Tie Yana, who has no ranking either, trounced Kim Moo- Kyo 21-12, 21-17, 21-18 in another third round match.

"Tie Yana played perfectly today," said Zang Yuying, coach of the Chinese women's team, "Kim Moo-Kyo is world famous and Tie Yana is not known in China. It is a real breakthrough for her and for China."

Zhang Yufeng said highly of her two students.

"The two young girls were shining today. Yu Minjie lost, but her excellent play and determination gave Ryu a scare," said the coach.
