Upsets Feature Fifth Day of Table Tennis

The main stage of singles and doubles events at Beijing Universiade table tennis dotted with a string of upsets in the knock-out matches on Monday.

Zhang Yong/Zhang Yining of China became one of the highest- seeded victims after the second seeds were eliminated by fifth seeds Park Sang-Joon/Ryu Ji-Hye of South Korea 2-1 in the quarterfinals of mixed doubles.

However, the Chinese pair were not the last victims of upsets as Wang Liqin/Xi Minjie, the second seeds in men's doubles, were eliminated by Chinese Taipei's pair Chuan Chih-Yuan/Yang Meng- Hsing 21-14, 10-21, 21-19.

In the men's singles, ninth seed Xi Minjie and Zhang Yingjie were the other victims when Xi was toppled by Belgian Closset Malc 3-2 and Zhang lost to Kiho Shinnosuke from Japan 21-20, 21-11 and 21-14.

Three Chinese male paddlers made their way to the next stage in men's singles. Unseeded Chinese paddler Zhang Yong thumped third seed Chiang Peng-Lung from Chinese Taipei 3-2 to advance to top 32.

Top-seeded Wang Liqin came from one set down to beat South Korean Kim Nam-Soo 3-1 while Liu Guozheng scored a straight-set win over Cho Yong-Song.

Four Chinese female paddlers advanced into the third round except Jiao Yongli who was edged out by Takahashi Mikie 3-0.
