Stage Set for Key Economic Summit

The economic trends of the Asian Pacific region will again come under the spotlight at a key forum in Shanghai.

This year's event will be boosted by the presence of one of the world's richest and most successful business people, software supremo, Bill Gates.

The city will in October host a gathering of some major global business leaders for the second time in two years as the Asian Pacific Economic Co-operation £šAPEC£© CEO Summit provides a forum for talks about new business and economic trends in the region.

Shanghai was the site for the 1999 Fortune Global Forum, where dozens of top officials from some of the world's most powerful companies mixed with local entrepreneurs to probe trends in the emerging Chinese economy.

Discussions at the APEC CEO Summit, to be held from October 18-20, will focus on promoting regional and global economic prosperity in the age of the New Economy and globalization, according to Yu Xiaosong, chairman of the China Council for Promotion of International Trade.

The New Economy relates to the growing influence of the Internet and information technology in business today.

He will also be the chairman for the 2001 APEC CEO Summit.

The CEO Summit will be part of the finale of the APEC activities for 2001. They will culminate in an informal meeting of leaders of the 21 APEC members, scheduled for October 20-21, also in Shanghai.

Yu said organizers of the summit have invited some leading economic figures to make speeches at the CEO Summit, and the feedback is very positive.
