China to Nurture Large Pasture in Yellow River Delta

The Yellow River Delta, once a wasteland in the coastal Shandong Province, expects to become China's largest pasture land in the coming five years with an annual production of 4 million tons of forage grass.

According to a recent agreement signed here at the Shandong provincial capital, Hengdian Group, a large township enterprise based in east China's Zhejiang Province, will invest 2 billion yuan (about 241 million U.S. dollars) to turn 40,000 hectares of wasteland in the Delta into pasture.

To start with, the group has purchased state-of-the-art agricultural machinery including tractors equipped with GPS (global positioning system), blade machine and broadcast sowing machine. Fifteen agricultural experts have been invited to join the pasture-nurturing project.

Hengdian Group has so far injected 150 million yuan (about 18 million U.S. dollars) to nurture over 2,667 hectares of pasture in Dongying City and Zhanhua County, both situated in the Delta.

Meanwhile, the group will boost sideline industries in the Delta, ranging from lawns and fodder to dairy and meat products.

"The grass industry is very promising in China, as it helps with the country's agricultural restructuring," said Xu Wenrong, president of Hengdian Group.
