Yemeni FM in Kuwait to Boost Bilateral Ties

Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah on Monday held talks with his Yemeni counterpart Abu Bakr Abdullah al-Kurbi on ways to boost bilateral ties in all fields, the official KUNA news agency said.

After the meeting, Sheikh Sabah told KUNA that during the talks, the two sides stressed the importance of promoting Kuwaiti-Yemeni relations.

Sheikh Sabah, who is also Kuwaiti first deputy prime minister, added that al-Kurbi conveyed a message from Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmed Al Sabah, which "deals with bilateral ties and outcome of the latest Arab summit in Amman."

The Kuwaiti foreign minister also said that al-Kurbi, who arrived here Saturday night and would leave on Tuesday, "informed us of the results of the Iraqi vice president's visit to Sanaa."

Iraqi Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan visited Yemen last week, where he discussed with Yemeni Prime Minister Abdul Qader Bajammal means of promoting bilateral relations, especially trade exchanges, in addition to signing a free trade zone agreement.

Kuwait-Yemen ties soured after Sanaa allegedly opposed the idea of forming an international coalition to drive Iraq out of Kuwait in 1990.

Their icy ties have begun to thaw since May 1997 when Kuwait declared that it was "willing to improve ties with all Arab countries except Iraq."

Yemen reopened its embassy in Kuwait on May 16, 1999 after nearly nine years of closure, marking the normalization of relations between the two countries.
