Laying of World's Second Longest Underwater Expressway Tunnel Starts

The first section of the world' s second longest underwater expressway tunnel was laid Sunday morning in the Huangpu river in Shanghai to join with the passage entrance of a ring road on land.

The 736-meter tunnel to be laid on the river bed will have up to eight double-lanes, which are expected to join a 2,880-meter entrance passage linking up to the 100 km external ring road in Shanghai.

Designed as a section of the second ring road in Shanghai to facilitate urban traffic, the road is required to cross the Huangpu River, a busy waterway running through the city.

The tunnel laying method was determined as more economical than the construction of a bridge or a tunnel built by dredging up the river.
