China Bags Fifth Diving Title as Guo Wins Second Crown


China Takes Fifth Diving Gold
Double world champion Guo Jingjing took her second title through women's 3m springboard at the Universiade Sunday to make it five golds for China in the diving pool.

Guo, who took gold in the 1m springboard Thursday, won Sunday evening by an astonishing margin of 53 points. Her teammate Li Rongjuan, who finished second behind Guo in the 1m springboard, got her second silver with 540.78 points.

Russian Natalia Oumyskova, bronze medalist in the 1m springboard, won her second bronze at 518.28 points.

Guo amassed 593.67 points from her five semifinal and five final dives, over 75 points ahead of Oumyskova, in the fifth diving event of the Universiade.

Sunday's contest was short of suspense, with Guo holding a comfortable lead all through the preliminary, semifinal and final sessions. Guo carried a 22-point lead from the semifinal into the final, and extended it with each of the five final dives.

Li, who was one point ahead of Oumyskova going into the final, was overtaken by the Russian after the first round in the final. But she caught up in the second round and remained there for the last three dives.

Ganna Sorokina from Ukraine, who placed sixth in the 1m springboard, finished fourth Sunday with 495.78 points.

China had been dominating the diving pool since actions unfold Thursday, sweeping all five gold medals and four silvers in five diving events.
