Japanese Judoka Shintani Triumphes in Women's Open at Universiade

Japan's Midori Shintani triumphed in the women's judo open category at the 21st Universiade in Beijing on Sunday.

Shintani, silver-medalist of the women's over 78kg category in the 2001 World Judo Championships, cruised into the final with a couple of comfortable victories.

In the final bout, the 21-year-old Shintani took control from the very start and sealed the victory with a throw on South Korean Cho Su Hee for ippon.

Local favorite Tong Wen, who lost to Shintani in the semifinal by ippon, had to settle for a bronze. Joining her on the medal rostrum was A-Sophie Mondiere of France.
