Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen has urged for a further development of the country's tourist industry, calling it a new economic development point of the country.

During his recent inspection tour to Baiyangdian, a tourist resort in north China's Hebei Province, Qian pointed out that tourist industry development will be of help to readjusting economic structure, protecting environment, improving investment climate and meeting the people's increasing demand for entertainment.

Baiyangdian, consisting of 143 shallow lakes with a total water area of 366 sq. km., is the largest freshwater lake in north China and a famous summer resort.

As Baiyangdian is nor far from Beijing, Qian suggested that the development of tourism of Hebei Province be included into Beijing' s tourist network so as to share the tourist resources.

He also pointed out that tourist resources should be well protected and environmental protection should be emphasized in developing tourist industry so that a sustainable economic development can be maintained.
