China Introduces Aquatic Species from Overseas
Since the 1950s, China has introduced over 100 aquatic product species from other countries, which have greatly promoted the growth of its aquiculture.
China has witnessed a rapid progress in the aquicultural industry since its reform and opening up in the late 1970s. The output of its aquatic products totaled 42.79 million tons last year, as against less than 500,000 tons in the 1950s.
According to Zhao Fazhen, an expert in the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, the rapid development is partly attributed to the country's efforts in introducing foreign aquatic species.
It is learned that since 1980 China introduced more than 100 aquatic product species from Bangladesh, Japan, Egypt, the United States, Thailand, India, Britain and other countries.
