Flooding Kills 12, Injures 72 in YunnanFlash floods and mudslides triggered by heavy rains killed at least 12 people in Southwest China's Yunnan Province and caused 140 million yuan (US$16.9 million) in damage, a local official said on Monday.Hopes of finding 23 people missing since rains drenched Funing county at the weekend were dimming, although rescue efforts were continuing, an official at the flood control office of Funing county told reporters. Mudslides and flashfloods seriously injured 72 people and destroyed at least 526 houses as well as bridges and major water pipes. Flood waters also swept away more than 500 head of livestock and destroyed crops, according to local officials. According to the government official, the rains had caused about 140 million yuan in damage. Heavy rains have ravaged large swathes of Southern China in recent months, contrasting dramatically with the weather in Northern China, which is in the grip of its longest drought since 1990. The drought has affected tens of millions of people and livestock.
