Second Seeds Zhang Yong/Zhang Yining Crashed out of Semifinals

Zhang Yong/Zhang Yining, second seeds in the mixed double event, were eliminated 1-2 Monday when they los tto fifth seeds Park Sang-Joon/Ryu Ji-Hye of South Korea at the quarter-finals at the 21st Universiade table tennis tournament.

The Chinese duo were not in their form apparently. They lost the first set quickly before they struggled a second set win to level it 1-1. In the third set, Zhang/Zhang felled behind from the beginning and never caught up.

In spite of the defeat, China pairs still make two out of four places in the semifinals.

Wang Liqin/Tie Yana, first seed, survived from a see-saw game 2- 1 by beating fifth seeds South Korean Cho Yong-Soo/Kim Moo-Kyo, 2- 1. Third seed pairs Liu Guozheng/Niu Jianfeng ousted Chang Yen-shu/ Tsui Shtu-li of Chinese Taipei 2-0, also seeded fifth.

Chiang Peng-Lung/Chen Chiu-Tan from Chinese Taipei grabed the fourth berth of semifinals by beating France pair Phung Armand/ Palut Anne-Claire 2-0.

The semifinals and finals of the event will be held Monday evening.
