HK St. John Ambulance Brigade Catches Attention at Universiade

A group of 20 uniformed people with strange equipment caught attention at a table tennis stadium of the 21st World University Games on Sunday.

They wore berets and black-white uniforms with badges on their arms and were on guard at the corner of the stadium with grotesque- shape luggage.

"We are the St. John Ambulance Brigade Delegation from Hong Kong, China," Lai Shun-Hing, a senior superintendent of the organization, told Xinhua. "We came here to assist the medical work at the Beijing Universiade."

Hong Kong St.John Ambulance Brigade, founded in 1916, is a commonweal organization which provides free first-aid services to Hong Kong civilians, according to Lai.

"Beijing provides first-class medical treatments for the athletes and we were invited to take care of spectators during the competitions," said delegation member Liao Mei-San.

The delegation had a rotating on-duty in all the competition venues. "We have been to several venues in these days such as diving Natatorium in Tsinghua University. Except some enswathements, we haven't meet serious cases," said Liao.

The St.John Ambulance Brigade, which also sent a 15-member team to the Sydney Olympics, has advanced medical equipment such as an automatic external defibrillator.

"We can provide various first aids on common bruises to cardiopathy," said Kot Nam-Shan, assistant superintendent of St. John.

"All of us voluntarily take part in the Ambulance Brigade and the delegation. This is the first time we serve China's mainland after China resumed sovereignty over Hong Kong. We looking forward to it," added Kot.
