University Games Is Clean

The 21st University Games has been clean four days since Wednesday's opening ceremony, according to a Chinese senior anti-doping official on Sunday.

"No positive results have been reported up to Sunday morning," said Yang Tianle, the president of the Doping Control Center of the Organizing Committee of the 21st Universiade.

Urine samples from the doping control stations are sent right after collection to the Chinese Anti-doping Center with the positive results to be announced in 48 hours upon arrival.

Yang, also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Medical Commission, told Xinhua the Doping Control Center has tested athletes from nine sports, namely basketball, fencing, football, gymnastics, swimming, diving, water polo, volleyball and judo, out of the overall 12 sports.

With track and field events to start on Monday, athletes from table tennis and tennis will be tested after semi-finals.

"Personally I hope this University Games will be clean," Yang said. "But we can't get the conclusion until the end of the Games. "

Mirrors have been installed around the wall of the toilets of doping control stations for the Universiade to prevent athletes from cheating during the urine provision process.

"I have been to six Olympic Games and six Asian Games and it is the first time as to my knowledge that mirrors will be used for urine provision," Yang said on Monday.

The 69-year-old medical doctor told Xinhua that there will be no less athletes being tested here than at any previous Universiade. The 20th Universiade in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, tested over 400 athletes.

Neither out-of-competition tests or blood tests will be conducted at the Games.
