Cuban Carrion Upsets Gao of China to Win Women's 48kg Judo at Universiade

Cuban Danie Carrion took the gold of women's judo under 48kg category as she over-threw Chinese Gao Lijuan in the final at the 21st Universiade in Beijing on Sunday.

The 22-year-old Gao proved too classy for Japan's Kayo Kitada and scored two Waza-ari to enter the final. In the other semi- final, Cuban Danie Carrion won against Tetya Lusnikova of Ukraine by a unanimous decision.

Gao, who seemed to win China's fifth judo gold with only one minute remaining, fell victim to a late drop by Carrion in the final and had to settle for the silver.

Frederique Jossinet of France captured a bronze through the repechage. She was joined on the podium by Kayo.
