Son Un Hui Reaps Unexpected First Gold for DPRK at Universiade

Son Un Hui claimed the first gold medal for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in Beijing Sunday afternoon with a victory in the the women's vault finals.

"It was unexpected for me to get the champion, and what I thought during the competition was to play my best," Son, a student majoring in gymnastics at the DPR Korea University of Physical Education, said at a press briefing.

Son was the first among the eight gymnasts to appear in the vault event and she defeated China's Olympic bronze medalist Dong Fangxiao and Liu Wei, other two odds-on favourites for the title.

Replying to a question about how she would celebrate the victory, the twenty-year-old gymnast said,"I will spend this wonderful day with the whole gymnastic team."

Son had competed in an age-group tournament in China in 1996 and won the gold for the vault and the silver for the uneven bars.

She participated in the Asian Games in Bangkok in 1998, the China Cup gymnastics competition in 1999 and the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
