S.Lankan Leftist Party Sets Deadline for Talks With Government
Sri Lanka's leftist JVP or People's Liberation Front has set August 31 as deadline for the government to conclude negotiations with it in a bid to end the current political crisis, officials said on Sunday.
A JVP delegation met President Chandrika Kumaratunga late on Saturday but no agreement was reached.
Kumaratunga said in a letter on Friday to the JVP that it is not possible to implement the party's proposals which included the forming of a probation government, reconvening of the parliament and the establishment of an independent commission.
Kumaratunga suspended parliament on July 10 for two months in a bid to avoid an almost certain defeat of her People's Alliance government in a vote of no-confidence after it lost its majority in the 255-member parliament in June following the withdrawal of the main Muslim Congress party.
Earlier this month, the JVP which holds crucial 10-seat in Parliament said that it was willing to form a probation government for a limited period of time.
